Russ Cochran takes second-round lead at Senior Players after red-hot start

Buoyed by birdies on the first five holes, Russ Cochran shot a course-record 6-under 64 to take a one-shot lead at the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship on Friday.

Cochran is at 6 under for the tournament and is trying for his third win in his last four events on the Champions Tour. Cochran, who will turn 52 at the end of this month, is also trying for his first major victory at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

"We got it going early and then like you do a lot of times, you kind of hold on for dear life after that," Cochran said. "But the start was great."

Michael Allen remains in second at 5 under after a second-round 67, and Mark O'Meara shot another 68 to stand alone at 4 under. First-round leader Tom Kite followed his first-round 67 with an even-par 70, leaving him in a tie with Jeff Sluman.

"The golf course is very difficult, and if you can play the weekend under par, you're going to be in very good shape," Sluman said after his second-round 67. "That's what you work for."

Loren Roberts and Jay Don Blake were five shots off the pace, while Mike Goodes and Joe Ozaki were tied for eighth, six shots behind. Champions Tour points leader Bernhard Langer shot 73, while rival Fred Couples withdrew from the tournament due to a back ailment.

Cochran, who had a long, workmanlike career on the PGA Tour, has broken through over the last month on the Champions Tour with wins at the Songdo Championship and the SAS Championship, a surge he credits to becoming a more aggressive player.

On Friday, Cochran put that practice in motion. Starting on the back nine, he attacked friendly pin placements and quickly established himself at the top of the leaderboard.

"We kind of decided today we were going to be a little more aggressive if we could because there's not that many great bailouts," Cochran said. "So we hit it pretty much at the flag. The more times you feel like you can step up and at least make that aggressive swing and try to stay with your line, I feel better about myself and my game."

After his hot start, Cochran added a birdie at No. 2 and then took what the course gave him to finish his solid round.

"I've been streaky this year -- it allows me to be a little more patient throughout the rest of the round," Cochran said.

Sluman, who has played with Cochran for 20 years on both the PGA and Champions tours, has not been surprised at his friend's recent resurgence.

"He's playing with a lot of confidence and he's freewheeling it out there," Sluman said. "I don't think a lot of people realize what kind of player he was. I knew right from the get-go how talented he was."

Allen kept pace with Cochran for most of the day before a bogey at No. 7 dropped him into second place, where he hopes to make a move during the weekend play against a top five that boasts four major championship winners.

"It will be fun to go out and play those guys the next few days," said Allen, who won the 2009 Senior PGA Championship. "It's a challenging course and you can't just get away with cheaping it around here."

Ravens Hope To Keep Cornerbacks Intact, Including Corey Graham

The play of the secondary was a strength for the Ravens, and the team wants to re-sign Corey Graham.



General Manager Ozzie Newsome has said on a number of occasions that a team can never have enough good cornerbacks.

That philosophy was evident this season, as cornerback was arguably the Ravens’ best and deepest position group with Jimmy Smith, Lardarius Webb and Corey Graham leading the way. With the way the three defenders played this season, the Ravens hope to keep the group intact going into next year.

“The cornerback position is a big strength for us,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said this week. “That’s something that we [would] really like to hold together.”

Graham, 28, is the only cornerback set to become a free agent. Smith is signed through next year with a team option for 2015, and Webb is signed through 2017.

Graham told reporters during locker cleanout day that he wants to remain with the Ravens, and Harbaugh stressed that the feeling is mutual.

“If we could keep Corey in the fold – and Ozzie feels the same way – we’re going to do everything we can to do it,” Harbaugh said.

Graham played every game this season as the No. 3 cornerback, and he finished with 74 tackles and a team-high four interceptions.

He could generate some solid interest on the free-agent market. He won’t get top cornerback money, but he could have put himself out of the Ravens’ price range with his play the last two seasons. Graham initially came to Baltimore as a special teams ace, but injuries forced him into the starting lineup and he capitalized on his chances to play.

Harbaugh compared Graham’s free agency status to some of the other key players the Ravens have lost in recent years, like outside linebacker Paul Kruger and inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe.

“We’ve had a lot of guys over the years we’ve wanted to keep here that we haven’t been able to do it,” Harbaugh said.

With reserves Chykie Brown and Asa Jackson both under contract, all five corners could return. Keeping that much consistency is rare in the salary cap era.

“We’d be in good shape there,” Harbaugh said. “If we lose Corey, then we’re going to have to do something where we’re going to have to add a corner to the mix for next year.”

　11月3日付けの最新世界ランキングが発表された。先週の「マイナビABCチャンピオンシップ」で今季初優勝を挙げた池田勇太が前週から61ランクアップの155位に浮上。また同大会単独3位の藤本佳則が126位、単独4位の片山晋呉が112位にそれぞれ順位を挙げた。

　一方、米国男子ツアー「WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ」を背中痛のため棄権した松山英樹は前週の28位から29位にランクダウン、また石川遼も113位から115位に順位を下げている。また同大会で今季初勝利を挙げたダスティン・ジョンソン（米国）が12位へのジャンプアップを果たしている。

　米国男子ツアー「ザ・マクグラドレー・クラシック」がジョージア州にあるシー・アイランドGC シーサイドCを舞台に開幕。大会初日は早朝の霧のため競技が一時中断。その影響で試合が遅れ全選手がホールアウトできず、17時33分に日没サスペンデットとなった。

　そんな中、2ホール残しているジョージ・マクニール（米国）が8アンダーで暫定単独首位に立った。初日16番まで終えたマクニールは8バーディ・ノーボギーでラウンドした。

　暫定2位タイにはブリニー・ベアード（米国）とブライアン・ゲイ（米国）が7アンダーで並び、続く5アンダー暫定4位タイにはすでに今シーズン1勝を挙げているウェブ・シンプソン（米国）やケビン・キスナー（米国）、ロバート・ガリガス（米国）、ノ・スヨン（韓国）、ケビン・チャペル（米国）の5人がつけた。

　米国男子ツアー「ザ・マクグラドレー・クラシック」の2日目は初日消化できなかった第1ラウンドに続き第2ラウンドが行われた。しかし、この日も全選手がホールアウトできず2日連続の日没サスペンデットとなってしまった。

　この日はスケジュールが大幅なズレに加え、強風に見舞われスコアメイクに苦しめられた。そんな中、クリス・カーク（米国）が第2ラウンドを6バーディ・2ボギーの“66”で回り通算8アンダーで暫定ながら単独首位に立った。

　そのカークと1打差の暫定2位タイにはケビン・チャペル（米国）、ウェブ・シンプソン（米国）、ブリニー・ベアード（米国）、ジョン・センデン（オーストラリア）の4人が通算7アンダーで並んだ。続く通算6アンダー暫定6位にはティム・クラーク（南アフリカ）、スコット・ブラウン（米国）ら4人がつけた。さらにマット・エブリー（米国）、ブライアン・ゲイ（米国）ら4人が通算5アンダーで並び暫定6位タイとした。
